Composition

Concept art of Conner  from assassins creed 3- Giles Beloeil
Conner and the corpse in the bottom right corner form the division line between the middle and right third. They are also aligned with the focal points (red dots). Conner’s arm follows the top right to bottom left diagonal on the last third.
The horizon is close to the horizontal line dividing the top third and the upper focal point. The upper focal point matches up with Conner’s knife so the viewer’s eyes go straight to it and know that it was him that hilled the guards on the floor.

Light

Dead Space concept art
The main light source in the image is strong torch light but most of the image is in shadows.
The silhouettes of the monster in the  background are hard to see so that they can still be threatening even in concept. There is also light coming out of the helmet but it only lights up a small area due to its size. Most of the image is actually light reflecting off of the armor being worn by the main character which i think is really clever.

Fallout 3 concept art
The main light source in this image is strong sunlight and casts large shadows over the area. There are also little light sources coming from the ship. I really like this image for its strong colouring and different shades of brown.

Final Image

I have decided to use this as my final image as i much happier with the tone of the image, with the dog taking up more space on the canvas it shows how it is stronger than the soldier and that it can overpower him. Also the colouring is much better as you can clearly see where the light source is coming from.

Final image sketch

The idea for this finalised image was that the Soldier had just met the first dog. The reason i didn't like this though was that the image did not show how dangerous the dog's really are and almost make's the viewer feel sorry for them instead of fear.

Enviroment sketch

This a pratice sketch i made for the enviroment. As the setting is in the underground i made a small layer of shading to the image and some highlights around the torches. the reason there is so much green is to add a sickly feeling to the image making not only the character but the also the viewer not want to be in the area for too long.

Soldier iterations

Dog Character iteration

This is a character iteration for the small dog. like his brothers he has no face and is tormented by his drug lust which drives him to insanity and he pays for it using the dollar coins which he is meant to protect. Though he is the smallest of his brothers he still holds his demonic demeanor which will keep the main character on his toes when around him.

Soldier Iteration

This is a brief character iteration for my soldier as a lord. This iteration has its flaws such as the fact that it does not show any sign of a wound and almost looks out of place in the time era i was set. this iteration took around 2 hours to make.

From Silhouettes to iteration

This is an adaption from one of my digital silhouettes into a character iteration. I first added some details from  around 1930 such as a helmet and trench coat which gives off the characters inner detail such as the fact that he likes to be covered almost head to toe and the bandages show off his injury which explains why he was honorably discharged.

1930 story synopsis

The year was 1937 and a lone soldier had got off his train in Boston, the soldier had been shot in his eye during the Spanish civil war and so was honorably discharged. After getting off his train he could no one else in station other than a woman in around her late 20's and he thought she was the most beautiful person he had ever seen. Sadly because of his wound he could not get enough courage to talk to the woman and so he walked straight past her. After a little while of walking in the station he saw another woman who looked almost the exact opposite to the one on the platform, She noticed him and quickly walked up to him asking for a favor. She asked him to quickly go into the underground part of the station as she had lost her cigarette holder which was given to her by her late fiance and she knew it was taken by a junkie in the sewers. The soldier felt it was his duty to return the holder as he would feel just as bad if the same happened to him so he ventured down into the underground. When the soldier finally reached the bottom of the stairs to the sewers he saw three closed doors with no signal of which one to go into. He tried first the door on the left and when he entered the room he saw nothing but a dimly light silhouette of a man sat in the corner and a pedestal with a jar holding an enormas amount of dollar coins. The soldier was weary at first as he could see something was wrong with the silhouette but he couldn't tell what at the time, So he quietly crept up to the jar and slowly took as many coins as he could carry. The soldier turned around and walked to the door. Suddenly a loose coin fell out of his pocket and hit the ground with a loud clang and when he turned to see if the silhouette had noticed he saw what was wrong. The man was already standing up looking right towards him and the horrific part was that the man did not have a face, The man suddenly burst into a sprint towards the soldier with his hands raised towards him with fingers like talons. Soldier quickly ran into the safe room and closed the door before the man could  reach him. After a pause the soldier slowly looked into the room on the right and could see another pedestal and jug only this time it was filled with $10 dollar notes which made the soldier almost run into the room but then he saw another man without a face only this time he was already standing up and he was larger than the first so the soldier quietly closed the door again. The soldier then looked inside the room in the middle, This time he saw the biggest man he had ever seen in his life asleep in the corner of the room and jug in the middle had not only dollar notes but a silver cigarette holder on the top. the Soldier quickly and quietly crept into the room and grabbed the holder while stuffing his pockets with more money and walked back out. When the soldier finally got back to the ugly woman she burst into happiness and thanked the soldier for returning her fathers holder, At that point the soldier realized the woman was lieing and so took the holder back but at that point the woman became extremely angry and attacked the soldier. Because of his training the soldier quickly countered the attack and accidently killed the woman he in the fraction of a second burst into flames and disapperd before she hit the ground. After the incident the soldier went to have a cigarette from the holder and when he lit it out of no where the three faceless man then stood infront of him, They asked him with their minds what was his wish and at that point the soldier realised the holder was magical and so he asked them to bring a woman who would love him truly and as quickly as they had arrived they then disapperd. After a short amount of time they then returned with the woman from the platform and told the soldier that she had fallen for him the moment he stepped of the train. Thanks to the money and holder the Soldier and woman had a happy life together using the faceless men to grant them any wish they wanted.

Silhouettes part 1

These are my begging silhouettes for my character. I have chosen the soldier for he is the main important character and feel he is the best to work with. I plan to update each image load 10 at a time so that i can see the progress be made for each design.

Story Synopsis

The story begins with a soldier returning home from war. He meets a witch, who asks him to climb into a hollow tree to retrieve a simple tinderbox. The witch gives the man permission to take anything he finds inside the chambers, but he must return the tinderbox. In the tree, he finds three chambers filled with precious coins guarded by three monstrous dogs, "one with eyes the size of teacups", who guards a vault filled with pennies, one with "eyes the size of supper-plates", who guards a vault filled with silver, and one with eyes "the size of windmills", who guards a vault filled with gold. He fills his pockets with money from each chamber, finds the tinderbox, and returns to the witch. When she demands the tinderbox without giving a reason, the soldier lops off her head with his sword. then  the soldier enters a large city and buys himself splendid clothing with the gold he took. He makes many friends, and lives in a magnificent apartment. He learns of a princess kept in a tower after a prophecy foretold her marriage to a common soldier; his interest is piqued and he wants to see her but realizes his whim cannot be satisfied. Eventually, the soldier's money is depleted and he is forced to live in a dark attic. He strikes the tinderbox to light the room, and one of the dogs appears before him. The soldier then discovers he can summon all three dogs and order them to bring him money from their subterranean dwelling. Again, he lives splendidly. One night, he recalls the story of the princess in the locked tower, and desires to see her. He strikes the tinderbox and sends the dog with eyes the size of teacups to bring her to his apartment. The soldier is overwhelmed with her beauty, kisses her and orders the dog to return her to the tower. The following morning, the princess tells her parents she has had a strange dream and relates the night's adventure. The royal couple then watch her closely. When the princess is carried away again, they unsuccessfully use a trail of flour and chalk marks on neighborhood doors to find where she spends her nights. Eventually, her whereabouts are discovered and the soldier is thrown in prison and sentenced to death. On the day of execution, the soldier sends a boy for his tinderbox, and, at the scaffold, asks to have a last smoke. He then strikes the tinderbox and the three monstrous dogs appear. They toss the judge and the councilors, the King and Queen into the air. All are dashed to pieces when they fall to the earth. The soldier and the princess are united, and the dogs join the wedding feast.

Personal Opinion.
I find this story rather confusing as there is no real lesson to be learnt, the soldier kills multiple people and not only does he not get punished but becomes the king! I think the main reason though that none of the peasents revolted  was because they all saw the strength of the three dogs which is truly impressive and they know that if they did challenge the soldier they would have the same fate as their king and queen.

Brief

For BA Project 1 i have to Transpose Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Tinderbox”

By doing 9 things.

1. create a short synopsis of the story
2. make 100 character silhouettes - minimum
3. design a character iteration
4. make a model sheet
5. make a character sheet
6. make environmental studies
7. a research portfolio
8. a reflective journal e.g. this blog
9. a final resolved image
